Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry is firmly committed to providing safe, ethical, and evidence-based mental
health care delivered with compassion and professionalism. The team comprises highly qualified
psychiatrists, psychologists, and a social worker, all working collaboratively to implement a
biopsychosocial model for assessment and treatment. The department operates a 15-bed ward staffed by
experienced nurses specializing in mental health care. Ongoing efforts focus on continuously enhancing
patient care and safety through quality improvement initiatives.
The department provides comprehensive treatment for a broad range of common mental health
conditions, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and
adjustment disorders, among others. Routine clinical psychology services including diagnostics, therapy,
and academic teaching are also offered, alongside a dedicated Substance Use Disorders Clinic.
The department plays a central role in promoting mental well-being among undergraduate and
postgraduate students at PMRIMS. Key priorities include enhancing mental health literacy, reducing
stigma surrounding mental illness, and encouraging help-seeking behavior. Regular outreach programs
and mental health awareness initiatives are conducted in the regional language, as well as mental health
programs in schools.
Recently, the department has expanded as a postgraduate teaching center with robust outpatient and
inpatient services, now offering an MD (Psychiatry) program with an annual intake of three MD residents.
The department is committed to treating mental disorders and reducing associated morbidity and
mortality. Psychiatry training is provided for MBBS students throughout their course, and the department
also actively participates in psychiatric training for undergraduate nursing students and offers short-term
training to postgraduate residents from other specialties.
All faculty members participate in continuing professional development to maintain expertise in psychiatric
practice, education, and research methodology, including presenting papers, attending conferences, and
participating in workshops. The department is actively engaged in research including faculty-led projects,
PG dissertations, and ICMR-STS initiatives.
