The Department of Respiratory Medicine (also referred to as Pulmonary Medicine) at PMRIMS is
dedicated to delivering high-quality care for patients across a wide range of respiratory conditions, from
acute illnesses such as pneumonia to chronic diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD) and asthma. The department plays a vital role in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of
lung and respiratory tract diseases, which significantly impact patients’ overall health and quality of life.
The department offers tailored educational programs for both undergraduate and postgraduate students,
ensuring a comprehensive, evolving learning experience that keeps pace with the dynamic field of
medicine. Clinical best practices are emphasized alongside a strong commitment to quality patient care.
The department fully implements the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, providing free
anti-tuberculosis medications to patients. Additionally, Pulmonary Function Tests are offered, and periodic
Free Asthma and Allergy Clinics are conducted to facilitate early diagnosis and proactive management.
Staffed by a team of highly skilled and experienced faculty, the department is committed to achieving the
best possible healthcare outcomes. Faculty collaborate with the Radiology Department for diagnostic
imaging services including chest X-rays, CT scans, and high-resolution CT scans. CT-guided biopsies and
thoracentesis (fluid collection) are also performed for the diagnosis of various pulmonary conditions.
Over time, the department has broadened its expertise to manage a wide spectrum of respiratory
diseases, including asthma, COPD, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), pleural diseases, and
sleep disorders.

  • Asthma and Allergy Clinics: Focused on the diagnosis and management of asthma and respiratory
    allergies.
  • Tuberculosis Clinic: Devoted to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis.
  • Lung Cancer Screening Clinic: Includes screening for lung cancer, smoking-associated ILD, COPD,
    and smoking cessation support.
  • Lung Transplant Screening Clinic.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Customized rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic lung
    conditions.
    The department is also actively engaged in clinical research, academics, and professional training,
    providing students with the essential skills and knowledge required in respiratory and sleep medicine.
    Faculty are engaged in academic publications, research projects, and national and international
    conferences, advancing the field of pulmonary medicine.
    The department is equipped with advanced tools including high-resolution CT scanners, pulmonary
    function testing equipment, bronchoscopes, and sleep study monitoring devices to ensure accurate
    diagnosis and effective treatment of respiratory conditions.
